It is seldom too late to start

Sometimes I think of something "too late". For example, the Card Update History for these pages! I "lost" all of the information I’d been throwing away from the recent update list on the welcome card.

The old proverb springs to mind:

"It’s no use closing the barn door after the horse is gone."

I have long found it difficult to start something when I feel like I already let the horses go free. "What’s the point?" I think. "I’ve already lost so many."

But it is very rarely too late to start collecting those horses.

For example, I have wanted to start capturing the cheeses I’ve enjoyed (and not enjoyed) in the form of a web page for years. And each year that went by, I would bemoan the fact that I hadn’t done it yet.

Well, I finally did it, and now I’m collecting those cheese horses before they escape with all the rest and I’m so glad I started now. It’s be a ton of fun to write about them.

Here’s what I’ve got so far: Dave’s Cheese Pages. Six cheeses as of this writing. Six I wouldn’t have if I hadn’t started when I did.

Another thing is starting my contact address book as part of Project Inbox 2026. TODO: link to my followup page when I’m done!

I wanted to title this "It’s never too late to start." But sometimes it is and I think my point is stronger if I don’t lie.

Another place where I wrote about it being "never too late" is Archive Your Projects!. I used "never" a little too casually. The fact is, it is definitely too late once you’ve lost the material. (Or when it’s been long enough that you’ve completely lost the memories. Trust me, kids, it happens.)
